Wilson, Jenkins get nod for Butkus

ATHENS - Picking the best Georgia linebacker this season may be in the eye of the beholder.

The Butkus Award named two Bulldogs Monday among the 15 semifinalists for the nation’s top linebacker: junior Jordan Jenkins and senior Ramik Wilson.

Wilson, an inside linebacker from Tampa, is second on Georgia and ranks ninth in the SEC with 55 tackles and has 5 ½ tackles for loss. Fellow senior Bulldog linebacker Amarlo Herrera leads the team with 57 tackles and is fifth in the SEC.

Jenkins, an outside linebacker from Hamilton, is third on the Bulldogs with 38 tackles, and leads the team with 6 ½ tackles for loss and is second on the team with 3 ½ sacks. That trails only outside linebacker Leonard Floyd’s five sacks.

“He thinks he’s going to lead the team in sacks,” Floyd said. “I told him, ‘As long as I’m here, you’re not.’ I just be messing. We mess with each other a lot. That’s my boy.”

“All of those guys are good players,” Muschamp said. “Floyd and Jenkins certainly rush the passer extremely well. Both linebackers (Herrera and Wilson) are instinctive tough players and play the run well. They’ve very good on third down.”

Finalists will be named on Nov. 24 and winners on Dec. 9.
