Blackout? Sure, but not in 2014

ATHENS - Richt raised the possibility that the team may do a blackout this season on his radio show Monday night, but shot that down on Tuesday.

“No,” Richt said. “Maybe next year.”

The obvious candidate would be Alabama, which will be making their first visit to Athens on Oct. 3, 2015 since the blackout in 2008.

“My goal would be to have one game next year that we could do that,” Richt said. “Maybe have it a planned event before the season even starts, not have a big secret about it, but know that’s part of our uniform combination and do it at a time when you’re not wearing black jerseys in a sweltering hot day.”

Georgia won wearing black jerseys in the 2007 season against Auburn and in the Sugar Bowl against Hawaii, but lost 41-30 in 2008 against Alabama in them.

Senior Michael Bennett said Tuesday: “I’d love one, but I don’t even know if we have the jerseys.”

Bennett said players have asked for the chance to wear black.

It just won’t come this year, Richt said.

“We are the red and black,” Richt said. “To have a black jersey to me is not a radical thing at all. It’s part of who we are.”
