No. 7 Georgia beats No. 2 Texas 10-9 in the 1984 Cotton Bowl at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The loss prevented the Longhorns from winning the National Championship and paved the way for No. 4 Miami to do so with its win in the 1984 Orange Bowl. John Lastinger ran 17 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with just 3:22 left on the clock to lift the Bulldogs to a 10-9 triumph over Texas before 67,891. The winning TD had been set up when Bulldog sophomore Gary Moss recovered a Craig Curry fumbled punt at the Longhorn 23-yard line. Lastinger called his own number on the third play from scrimmage and darted outside right where he streaked 17 yards for the touchdown.
