The Throwback: Big Byrd a Dawg

Today's Dawg Post Throwback Story of the Day features's coverage of CJ Byrd's commitment to Georgia in 2004.


North Augusta, S.C. ATH CJ Byrd, who is considered one of the nation's top prospects with 33 scholarship offers, committed to the University of Georgia on Saturday.

The player affectionately called "Big Byrd" because of his lanky stature and good-natured personality picked the Bulldogs over Clemson, Southern Cal and Florida State. He broke the news to Georgia coach Mark Richt at Saturday's game against Georgia Tech.

"Georgia just feels like home," C.J. Byrd said. "All the schools were great. I just felt like I fit in at Georgia the best. I love Georgia because of Coach Richt and what he stands for. I love Georgia because they compete for national championships. I love Georgia because it is located only 100 miles from North Augusta, meaning my friends and family can come to the games."

Byrd, who is ranked as the No. 22 overall player in the nation by, said he felt like Saturday was the right time to make the decision.
