We knew that day just how good this group would be - at least if you could see the looks on the coaches’ faces that day you would have been able to tell - or perhaps the coaches were tired from all of that travel.
But like every other recruiting class, this group would have growing pains. On Signing Day 2006 Matthew Stafford, Ricardo Crawford, Asher Allen and Kris Durham were all enrolled. Three of those four wound up being drafted by NFL teams with Stafford going No. 1 overall to the Lions in 2009.
Four-star Middletown (NJ) running back Knowshon Moreno was a ball of energy, but he redshirted the 2006 season - a mistake Mark Richt has not since made. The Bulldogs would only get the pleasure of watching Moreno play for two seasons. But his impact on the field and in the program was felt from that point forward. In fact, the mistake of redshirting Moreno directly led to Richt playing true freshmen more often in the future from that point on.
All told, Georgia signed 25 players in 2006 and a whopping eight of those players were drafted by NFL teams - that’s the most of any Georgia class on record. That should tell you all you need to know about which class was the best I’ve ever covered.
