Not Over Yet for Smith

MONTEZUMA - Signing Day isn’t over yet - at least not for Roquan Smith.

And Smith is in no rush to make a decision.

The four-star Macon County linebacker announced at 11 AM on ESPNU that he would sign with UCLA, but the day has turned sideways and fast.

Smith's initial plan as of Tuesday night was to announce his school choice and then sign “a few hours later” to make certain he had made the right decision. That plan was still in place on Wednesday after he picked the Bruins.

But since that time UCLA’s lead recruiter and coach for Smith, Jeff Ulbrich, is headed to the NFL to become an assistant coach for the Atlanta Falcons, according to a report by Fox Sports.

When asked if he is committed to UCLA right now Smith replied: “I don’t know.”

If Ulbrich does go to the Falcons, does that make a difference from Smith.

“Yes, he’s the reason I committed to UCLA," Smith said. "But I am close with some of the other coaches."

Smith told Scout.com Tuesday night that he was torn between the two schools, and that he was 60/40 on which school he would pick.

Meanwhile in Athens, the Bulldogs’ assistant coaches, who traditionally attend Georgia’s Signing Day press conference along with prospects who have enrolled early. But assistant coaches were missing during today’s press conference - instead they were off recruiting a few final recruits - most notably Smith.

Smith said that he will call the coaches at Georgia later tonight at some point, but that the only coach he's spoken with thus far today has been Ulbrich. He also said that right now he's still only going to pick between UCLA and Georgia.
