Legge’s Thoughts: I’m just looking at this image right now, and it occurs to me that this exact moment was the pinnacle of this team. Georgia had lost at Alabama 65-57 only six days before this game. Everywhere you turned everyone was saying that this game was going to decide who was going to the NCAA Tournament. The loser, some said, was out of the NCAAs for sure. I thought and said that Georgia had likely already punched its ticket to the tournament the day before with the 69-51 win over lowly Auburn.
I was right.
But this dunk gave Georgia 48-34 lead with only 7:33 remaining in the game. Alabama looked done, but they were not. The Tide rallied and pushed the game into overtime. That came after Dustin Ware knocked in a three-pointer at the end of regulation - only to have it called back because coach Mark Fox had called timeout just before the shot.
The Bulldogs got into the NCAAs anyway - but it lost in the first round to Washington, which still stands as Fox’s only appearance in the tournament as head coach of the Bulldogs.
