Ben Cleveland is a 2016 Georgia commit who plays offensive tackle for Stephens County. The massive lineman is listed at 6’7, 314 lbs, and is currently ranked as the number 46 recruit in the country by scout.com.
From watching his tape of the 2014 season, what really stands out is his size, which is impossible to ignore. Unfortunately, just because he is a massive young man does not mean he will turn out to be an incredible lineman for the Bulldogs. He has a great deal of potential, but he is not perfect. He is a big strong kid, and does a great job of using his size to his advantage, especially in run blocking. Almost every run is designed to go to Cleveland’s side of the line, and he does a nice job of using leverage to turn the defender around creating a hole for his running back. Once he gets his hands on his opponent, he wins the battle almost every time.
I did not see him really pass block at all while watching his tape, but I was able to watch him in pass protection during the Rising Seniors game in late December. His size did not help him against speedy edge rushers, as some of them were able to use their speed to get around the edge and get into the backfield. For the most part, he did a good job in pass protection, and seemed to use the correct technique. When he was beat, it was because the defender just ran around him. Getting beat that way is not the worst thing in the world, because sometimes the defender can run himself out of the play, especially if the Quarterback can step up in the pocket and get rid of the ball quickly.
Overall, I can see why Ben Cleveland is one of the most sought after lineman in the 2016 class. He is so big and strong for a kid his age, and he can move very well for someone with his size. He is an excellent run blocker, which leads me to believe he might end up playing more Guard than Tackle when he suits up for the Bulldogs.
