Dawgs punish Indians

Athens, GA - David Greene and Musa Smith power Georgia past Arkansas State 45-17

The Mark Richt era of Georgia football began successfully Saturday as Georgia topped Arkansas State 45-17. David Greene has apparently locked down the starting quarterback role, at least for the South Carolina game, on the strength of his performance against the Indians. Greene was 21 of 29 for 285 yards, while leading the Dawgs on five touchdown drives.

Musa Smith was also a star Saturday afternoon, as he rushed for 158 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns. Smith's best run of the day was a 49-yard scoring jaunt with 8:13 left in the third quarter. The play gave Georgia a secure 31-7 lead.

Richt was complementary of his freshman quarterback, but he also showed concern about next week's game against South Carolina.

"David Greene was outstanding today and overall, we had a good start to the season. If we can eliminate some of the mistakes we made today, and become a little more disciplined, we'll be that much better next week. We'll need to be an improved football team by next Saturday."

Georgia extends its season opening win streak to five. Georgia now awaits South Carolina. It will be the opening conference game for both squads.
