This Day in Georgia History: March 15th

Dawg Post takes a look back on what happened on this day in Georgia history.

March 15

No. 3 seed Georgia beats No. 14 seed Murray State 85-68 in the First Round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament.

East six seed Georgia beats SEC East two seed Kentucky 60-56 in overtime of the quarterfinals of the 2008 SEC Tournament at Alexander Memorial Coliseum on the campus of Georgia Tech. The game had been moved from the night before after a tornado hit downtown Atlanta and left the Georgia Dome too dangerous to play in.

Reseve guard Zac Swansey hit the game winner on a turnaround 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left in overtime.

Then the Bulldogs took on SEC West one seed Mississippi State later that night. State’s game with Alabama was delayed due to the tornado, but State won 69-67 in overtime - only minutes after the storm hit the Georgia Dome.

Georgia and State tipped at 8:30 in order to give Georgia a little more time to rest from its noon tipoff with Kentucky earlier that Saturday. But Sundiata Gaines scored 20 points and Georgia beat State 64-60 to send Georgia to the 2008 SEC Championship Game against Arkansas.
