Ledbetter producing despite weight loss

Jonathan Ledbetter certainly turned some heads during G Day on Saturday.

ATHENS - Among the early enrollees who stood out in Saturday’s G-Day was defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter.

His seven tackles trailed only Natrez Patrick and Reggie Carter’s eight.

The 6-foot-4 Ledbetter left Tucker High School in the 265 to 270 range, but during the spring game TV broadcast, it was reported he had lost a significant amount of weight due to a sickness.

“I didn’t think it was anything major,” Bryan Lamar, who coached Ledbetter at Tucker High, said this week. “He had lost a lot of weight just from being up there the different training regimen and all that kind of stuff.”

Ledbetter, a former Alabama commitment, looks in line to contribute as a freshman in a defensive line class that includes five-star Trent Thompson from Westover.

Defensive end Josh Dawson said Ledbetter has been like the other early enrollees.

“They’ve been motivated and just anxious to get on the field, learn more stuff and just do it the Georgia Way,” Dawson said. “I feel like they all made a great impact this spring.”

Lamar said he expects Ledbetter “to work hard over the summer and still put on some weight and get a lot stronger, too. He’ll be a good player up there the whole time he’s there.”
