I figured this would be a good week to catch up on some random thoughts, and maybe highlight a few matchups on tap for this week.
Think FSU might not finish in the top 5 again this year? If you are talking about the Criminoles you may be right -- but another FSU could. I'm sorry, but no one in the country has looked better so far than Fresno State, against two stout opponents. If they can escape this Saturday in Wisconsin (definitely possible) then they probably go undefeated this year. And this is no Tulane from a few years back -- can you name anyone who has opened up the year with opponents as tough as Colorado, Oregon State, and Wisconsin over three straight games? I didn't think so... First coach really on the hot seat? Woody Widenhofer. Even at a place where they don't expect much, they expect a little... I'm sure Dennis Franchione is reeling from having a team commit 15(!) penalties, while their opponent didn't commit any . That is a heck of a discrepancy, and one they couldn't overcome, even though they outgained the Bruins by a large margin. One offensive lineman jumped offsides four freaking times. Come on fella, you ain't at Tennessee, you can count, can't you?... Speaking of the Bama game, did everyone see that 70-yard gift the Tide got in the first half on that pass play? Kevin Ramsey must have found work again... Yes, I hate to admit it, Miami looks pretty dang good. Well, actually they look stupid, in those arena-league uniforms. But their results, nonetheless, were impressive Saturday... What a great looking offensive attack last week from Georgia. (And believe me, that hasn't been said in a long while.) Perfect mix of running, vertical passing, and dink-and-duck. However, dawgnation better hope the defensive woes were due to suspended players, and not on-the-job training by the defensive coordinator... Has there ever been a bigger bust than Ronald Curry? And think John Bunting wants to re-think his decision to leave the Big Easy?... Yes forward-thinking Mississippians, Eli did indeed look good. But you won't be playing Murray State this weekend; those "ausome" Tigers didn't let their opponent last week cross the fifty yard line... So lifelong Georgia Tech recruiter (and Quincy's HS coach) Buck Godfrey says UGA's redneck fanbase was waiting to crucify him because he was a black quarterback. Well, I won't argue that much because there may be a little truth in it, unfortunately. But I just wonder what the reaction would be if a coach said the reverse of that, about a white QB at a black college... Finally, here's betting Virginia Tech overcomes the loss of running back Lee Suggs. Their schedule allows plenty of time to compensate before the only real test of the year, the Canes... (Now, should I say 'Selah' or something weird like that here?)
As far as games this weekend, watch for Nebraska to lay it on the catholics, UGA to upset South Carolina (boy does that sound strange), and little UAB to hang with the 'Noles into the 3rd quarter. Keep the love letters coming, and happy tailgatin'.
