UGA Sets for Friday Scrimmage

ATHENS - It will be good against good at Georgia’s first preseason scrimmage on Friday.

That’s the way Mark Richt now likes to see his top offensive unit go up against his top defensive unit in the closest thing to a game situation before the Sept. 5 opener against Louisiana-Monroe.

“For years we went ones vs. twos - one offense vs. two defense and one defense vs. the two offense,” Richt said. “But we go ones vs. ones now. I think it’s been good. I think it’s been healthy. There are some rotations. If you run an eight-play drive and you’re no huddling, it’s hard to have a corps of receivers run eight plays in a row or eight routes in a row without getting some kind of substitution. We tend to roll our backs about every four plays or so. We’re not looking to wear anybody down.”

The plan is to get first-team work for all three candidates for the starting quarterback job: Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta and Greyson Lambert.

“A lot of times you only get good looks when you’re with the ones, but the two units have had their moments when they can pass protect,” Richt said. “The three units at times has been able to pass protect at times. When you get a little bit of time in the pocket, it’s easier to be able to gauge a quarterback’s ability to take care of business.”
