Even w/ Turf Toe Elijah Holyfield Powers On

Woodward RB Elijah Holyfield was nice enough to take a few minutes out of his night to talk with Wes Muilenburg after his team’s win over GAC in a preseason scrimmage.

Here’s what the four-star running back had to say about football, music and his minor injury.

Wes Muilenburg: How long have you been playing football?

Elijah Holyfield: I started playing football when I was 4 years old. My step dad put me in when I was kinda young. So, it’s a pretty big part of my life.

Wes Muilenburg: When did you know you were going to be a good running back?

Elijah Holyfield: I’ve played running back all my life, but you know, as a kid, you never really think about all the stuff that could possibly happen by being good. When I got to high school my 9th grade year when I started, I realized I was a little bit different from the normal kids.

Wes Muilenburg: How fast do you run the 40?

A: I really hate training for a 40. I think it is a waste of time. I will never run the 40 on the football field, so when I have to train for it I could run a consistent 4.5. I want to be fast in the game, and whatever speed that is.

Wes Muilenburg: How much can you bench?

Elijah Holyfield: My bench is 365.

Wes Muilenburg: What is your daily workout routine like?

Elijah Holyfield: For school, we wake up in the morning before school and we lift and we go through the normal school day. And then we have practice. On Thursday before game days we don’t lift we stretch that morning. I go to practice and go to this guy and stretch and do balance stuff. Stuff that I won’t be tired for tomorrow (for the game) and I will feel a lot better (for the game).

Wes Muilenburg: Do you have any hobbies outside of football?

Elijah Holyfield: No big ones. I go hang out with my friends just like any normal high school kid. I don’t have time during football season.

Wes Muilenburg: What is your favorite subject in school?

Elijah Holyfield: Probably history. It is pretty interesting. I’d say it is my favorite by far.

Wes Muilenburg: I know this is a little early, but have you thought about a major yet?

Elijah Holyfield: I thinking either business or communications. I’m not really sure exactly what I want to do yet, but that probably seems like one of the routes I’m going to go.

Wes Muilenburg: What is your favorite movie?

Elijah Holyfield: Either 300 or The Great Gatsby.

Wes Muilenburg: Who is your favorite artist?

Elijah Holyfield: The Weeknd, definitely.

Wes Muilenburg: You narrowed your school from 10 to 5. What did you look for in the 5 schools?

Elijah Holyfield: Definitely a place that help me get to the next level. That’s the number one thing. I have to be able to compete for a championship and be able to get me to the next level and also get a great education. So, all five of those schools did that and I realized once I slimmed those five down I couldn’t really go wrong with either one, so now I just have to figure out where I’m the most comfortable.

Wes Muilenburg: Has anyone influenced your decision?

Elijah Holyfield: Not too much. I try to get advice from everybody but not take too much from one person because one person is thinking from their side and not my side. I try to take a little bit from everybody.

Wes Muilenburg: You're going to make your final decision on a school September 4. Could you give me some insight on your top three?

Elijah Holyfield: Ah,(laughing), I can’t do that for you, but I mean, I’m excited to get it over with and really tired of the whole process. It’s getting kinda overwhelming and stuff like that. I’m excited. We have a big game that night. I got turf toe tonight so my mind is more on getting better and ready to play not next week, but the week after that.

Wes Muilenburg: Last question, have you ever gotten in the ring and sparred with Evander?

Elijah Holyfield: No, I have never gotten in the ring with him. I used to box for a little while, but I never got in the ring and sparred with him.
