UGA DL Chris Mayes Impresses

ATHENS - Turn and run. Then chase the ball - that was the plan.

That’s what Georgia defensive line coach Tracy Rocker coaches up his players to do.

Not many probably thought that nose guard Chris Mayes could run like he did when he ran from some three yards behind quarterback Garrett Smith and chased him down to make tackle on a 24-yard second-quarter gain.

“Dude, you saved a touchdown,” his teammates told him when he got back on the sideline. He said he was shocked. “I was like, `Really?’”

They had seen some of that this preseason.

“I’ve broke on a couple this camp,” said Mayes, who had three tackles and started.“Coach has just been telling me to keep it up, chase the ball, chase the ball.”

The 6-foot-4 Mayes says he weighs 330 now.

“Chris has really gotten himself in tremendous shape,” Richt said. “He’s just a big old kid as it is. He trimmed down. He’s moving better. He’s starting to make plays for us. We’re happy with what he did.”
