Morgan visits with family of injured Southern player

Georgia kicker Marshall Morgan visited with the family of Southern University wide receiver Devon Gales who sustained a severe spinal injury on a kickoff return in which Gales and Morgan collided in Saturday’s game, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said.

“I think it was good for him to go and talk to everybody and understand that it’s football,” Richt said. “No one’s mad at Marshall and he didn’t do anything that was out of line in any way shape or form. It’s just unfortunate.”

Morgan hasn’t been available to speak to the media this week. After Saturday’s game he said: ““I hope the guy is all right. I’ll be praying for him and his family.” Gales underwent spinal surgery Sunday to stabilize neck fractures. The school has only said Gales has movement in his upper body.

“He’s speaking and talking and he understands the road that’s in front of him,” Southern coach Dawson Odums said Monday.

Southern has launched the Devon Gales Fund to provide financial assistance to Gales and his family to cover medical expenses. Donations can be made at https://netcommunity.sus.edu/the-devon-gales-fund

“I’m hoping we’ll do anything in our power as the Bulldog Nation to bless Devon and his family going through this time,” Richt said at the start of his weekly news conference. “I’m looking forward to seeing his progress.”
