Isaiah McKenzie, who scored both of Georgia’s touchdowns in the 20-13 win at Auburn Saturday, was named Monday as SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Now Georgia Southern will try to contain him Saturday in Athens after the sophomore tied a Georgia record with his fourth career punt return touchdown. It went for 53 yards.
“I’m taking suggestions if you’ve got any for me,” Georgia Southern coach Willie Fritz said Monday. “Obviously he’s a dynamic return guy. Kind of blew the game open last week. Tremendous speed and he runs north-south. We’ve just got to do a great job in coverage. It’s more difficult than people think it is to kick away from somebody. Sometimes when you do that, you lose field position as well.”
McKenzie also has a kickoff return for touchdown. The five return touchdowns ties him with Brandon Boykin (2008-11) for the UGA record. Buzy Rosenberg (1970-72) is tied with McKenzie with the four punt return touchdowns.
McKenzie also scored on a four-yard run against Auburn.
Georgia Tech kickoff time on hold
Georgia will close out its regular season at rival Georgia Tech by playing a day game.
The kickoff time for the Nov. 28 game will either be noon or 3:30 p.m., according to an announcement on Monday. ESPN/ABC is using a six-day option, which means a decision will be made after Saturday’s games.
The Georgia-Georgia Tech game will be shown on either ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ABC.
The other games being considered are North Carolina-N.C. State and Virginia Tech-Virginia, according to the ACC.
Georgia plays this Saturday at 7 p.m. against Georgia Southern on ESPNU. Georgia Tech travels to Miami.
