UGA Recruiting Updates: Wed. Night Update

ATHENS - Kirby Smart may not attend Georgia’s annual Gala for its seniors.

That’s the word coming out of Athens as of today at least. The newly-hired head coach is set to host his own recruiting event separate from the event the 2015 team will have on Saturday night. It is unclear if Smart will attend the annual Gala, or if he will skip it all together in order to concentrate on the official visit of the likes of Jacob Eason, Ben Cleveland and possibly Willie Allen.

Meanwhile, Eason visited Washington today. His local high school team is littered with folks who would love for him to stay in state and play for the Huskies, but that’s probably unlikely at this time.

2019 Frederica Academy ATH Jashawn Sheffield was visited by Todd Hartley today, and was told that he still has an offer from the Bulldogs. Sheffield was offered by Mark Richt at midfield during Georgia’s win over Georgia Southern last month. A freshman this past season, Sheffield primarily played running back.

Stand by for Chad Clay to firm up his commitment to Georgia after LSU’s Les Miles’ visit on Wednesday night.

Chad Simmons reports: “Clay’s commitment is still firm, but he has one more in-home visit to go before he makes his final decision. LSU will be in to visit Clay Wednesday night. The Tigers are the only threat to UGA at this time. Smart let Chad Clay know he is a top priority for UGA, and I think he stays with Georgia right now.”

Simmons went on to break down Georgia commit Elijah Holyfield’s performance against Buford last Friday night.

“He had me thinking a little about former Dawg running back Knowshon Moreno,” Simmons said. “UGA fans remember the energy Moreno played with and how he would spring back to the huddle after a play ended — I saw some of that in Holyfield. His fire, energy, and passion for the game stood out.”

It also seems like Smart’s coaching staff is slowly being built. It looks more and more like Thomas Brown is going to be on staff at UGA with Smart. In addition, Glenn Schumann is calling himself an assistant coach at UGA, and I expect him to be the secondary coach at Georgia.

Those two and Smart have been out recruiting as have Hartley and Director of Football Operations Josh Lee.
