Smart Makes the Move on OC at UGA

ATHENS - Kirby Smart has hired two offensive coaches - including his offensive coordinator.

That’s according to Football, which is reporting that Smart has picked up Pitt offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and Arkansas offensive line coach Sam Pittman to join his staff at Georgia.

The report comes after a night where Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford was heavily speculated to become the next offensive coordinator in Athens. But he refuted that this morning to Dawg Post.

“No, check the source of the rumor,” he said. “Some Twitter hack from podunk. All Twitter nonsense. I’m the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame.”

The Chaney hire confirms a previous Dawg Post report that Brian Schottenheimer would not be retained by Smart. Chaney has been the offensive coordinator at Purdue, Tennessee, Arkansas and Pitt. He coached NFL champion Drew Brees from 1997-2000 at Purdue using a spread offense. But he changed to a pro-style offense after a few years working in the NFL with the Rams.
