“We need to get everyone to stay in the state,” Richard LeCounte said on Sunday after calling Smart and the UGA staff to let them know that he was ready to commit. “You see a guy last night from Gainesville at the Heisman Trophy Award - that just tells you right there how much talent we have in the state.”
So starts the Kirby Smart era of recruiting at Georgia - with a commitment from a likely 5-star defensive back who was considering both Alabama and the Bulldogs. Scout considers LeCounte the No. 25 overall player in the 2017 class.
“I’ve been torn between Alabama and Georgia for a long time, but with Coach Smart bing at Georgia right now - playing for a defensive guru - Coach Smart is putting all of that together,” LeCounte said.
LeCounte is the fourth 2017 commitment for the Bulldogs. He and Glynn Academy ATH Dee Jay Dallas give the Bulldogs a strong foothold in southeast Georgia in this class.
“I just want to represent my state,” LeCounte continued. “I think I can tell you that I am pretty popular with other guys, and I will reach out to them.”
That includes Cartersville QB Trevor Lawrence, who knocked out LeCounte and Liberty County in this year’s playoffs.
“Yeah I’m going to reach out to him. He’s a good dude. We just need everyone playing together,” LeCounte continued. “I have a few other people in mind, too, but I don’t want to say who I am going to go after. We want to build a dynasty at Georgia.”
