The hire of Kirby Smart in Athens made a huge impact on multiple top prospects in the state of Georgia. The prospect that might have been impacted the most is top safety prospect Richard LeCounte. The talented 2017 ball hawk became the first Bulldog commit of the Kirby Smart era.
“It feels great.” LeCounte said. “This is the place where I want to be. It was something I’ve thought about for a long time.” Location was a big factor in his decision, but so was head coach Kirby Smart.”
“Location was huge for me. If Ohio State was a little closer I would have given them a closer look, but I really wanted to stay close to my mom and dad and the rest of my family.” LeCounte said. “The hiring of Coach Smart was really big for me. I have a great relationship with Coach Smart. He’s been recruiting me since I was in the 8th grade. He told me he wants me to come in and be the leader of this class.”
That’s exactly what LeCounte is doing.
“Some of the guys I want to bring in with me are Malik Herring, William Poole, Jamyest Williams and Deangelo Gibbs. We are trying to get everybody. You had guys like Robert Nkemdiche, DeShaun Watson, Raekwon McMillan that all left the state, and that’s not going to happen anymore.”
Although Coach Smart had a big influence on LeCounte’s decision, he said he always had a special place in his heart for Georgia. “Everytime I visited it felt like home. It was a perfect situation. I love the atmosphere.” LeCounte said. “Although I hated to see the coaches go, I committed to the school, not necessarily the coaches. I must have visited Georgia about 10 times. ”
