The former Alabama commit flopped to UGA on Thursday - a move that those close to him say is a permanent move to play in Silver Britches.
“I am announcing my decommitment from the University of Alabama’s football program, and with much thought and prayers from my friends, coaches and most importantly, my family, I am so blessed and so thankful to announce the commitment to my hometown team. I am verbally committing to The University of Georgia. I’d like to thank Coach (Kirby) Smart and the staff at UGA for also giving me the opportunity to play football and continue playing the game I love at the school that I have rooted for my entire life.”,” Fromm tweeted Thursday.
This was not a quick-trigger move. Fromm visited the Bulldogs under the radar last Friday. Then he went back to Tuscaloosa in order to not “make an emotional decision”. He waited a few more days before returning to Athens on Wednesday. Fromm finished off finish off his flip somewhere before midnight that night.
Suddenly the Bulldogs had flipped yet another player from Alabama to the Bulldogs. It seems that Kirby Smart is starting to pay off in defending the state against the Elephants after all.
Jake Fromm grew up as a UGA fan. The person he most connected to at Alabama, according to Chad Simmons, was Kirby Smart. Once Smart left T Town that made things a little more difficult for the Tide to hold on to the middle Georgia prospect.
“This was an incredibly hard decision to make and my family, and I think it is the right one,” he continued on Twitter. “I am ready to start my journey as a Dawg and help them in the recruiting process. I feel at home and peace with this decision that God has led me to.”
One person close to the situation described Fromm’s decision to pick UGA as “the end of his recruiting honeymoon. He wants the honeymoon of recruiting to be over. He wants to go a recruit the guys that are going to play with him.”
Other insiders say that Fromm, like many quarterback prospects have said, connected with UGA’s new offensive coordinator Jim Cheney.
“He really likes Cheney’s offensive philosophy, and he really connected with him,” they said. “This really came down to connecting more with the UGA staff than the one at Alabama.”
Kirby Smart’s influence in this development can not be undersold. It is now becoming clear that Smart’s connections in the recruiting world are already bearing fruit. What Fromm’s commitment means to the likes of Trevor Lawrence and UGA seems unclear. But insiders say that Lawrence understands that no matter where he signs will almost certainly sign at least one quarterback wherever he signs.null
