Dawgs Scrimmage at Sanford: Report

ATHENS -Georgia conducted a two-hour scrimmage in full pads Saturday at Sanford Stadium.

After the workout, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said the effort was good, the toughness displayed was okay and the execution was poor.

“We have another scrimmage next week to show progress as we look for the best 50 to 60 football players,” said Smart. “Sunday will be an off day and next week is another fundamental week to get us better and focus on getting more reps for those guys that will help us get ready for our first opponent.”

When asked about the quarterback play Saturday, Smart said he would reserve judgment until watching the tape of the scrimmage.

“Each guy did something good, and each guy did something bonehead,” Smart added. “All the quarterbacks rolled in with different groups and took reps with the first unit.”

Junior tailback Nick Chubb saw action and did well, however Smart said there were some quick whistles plus the defense had poor tackling, and there will be more emphasis on that in the upcoming practices.

Graduate transfer defensive back Maurice Smith joined the team Saturday for the first time, and he was dressed in a number two jersey and shorts as he goes through the acclimatization period.

“Maurice knows a lot of the guys on the team through recruiting; they were receptive and excited to have him,” said Smart. “He’s comfortable with our system, however everything is not the same. He’s now working on getting in shape because he hasn’t been in pads since the spring.”
