Blessed Trinity athlete JD Bertrand is quickly becoming one of the top linebacker prospects in the country. The 2019 prospect has had a big week, picking up offers from LSU and Georgia. Bertrand shared his thoughts on earning an offer from the in-state school.
“Head coach Kirby Smart offered me and I was very excited to get the offer.” Bertrand said. “I did not know it coming. I was thinking it would probably come sometime this summer after attending their camp, but I don’t have any complaints. I’m happy about it.”
The 6-foot-1 216-pound athlete plays both linebacker and tight end, but the Bulldogs are recruiting him to play on the defensive side of the football.
“Coach Smart said he’s seen my film and can see me playing multiple positions (ILB, OLB, Rover, DE), but he offered me as an inside linebacker. I think I’ll be able to fit well into their defensive scheme.”
On film Bertrand shows good instincts, he’s a sure tackler, and he gets off blocks well. He reacts quickly and can dissect a play before it starts to happen. He powers through blocks and has a true nose for the football. He runs well and is great in coverage as well. His versatility and athleticism could make him one of the highest ranked linebackers in the country when the next 2019 rankings come out. After an impressive sophomore season, Bertrand impressed in December’s Elite Sophomore Classic all-star game.
In the middle of January, Bertrand took a visit to Georgia with the True19 team. On that visit he spoke with multiple coaches including Kirby Smart, he saw the facilities, and was able to see the fully finished indoor facility for the first time. Bertrand took a visit to Auburn two weeks ago, and plays to visit Georgia on Thursday, LSU on Saturday, and Stanford in April.
