Southern Football rankings

This week the SEC West is decided and the ACC tries to figure out which teams will head to which bowls.

23. North Carolina – I really thought that Vandy had this position locked down in the poll. But after Carolina dropped the ball again, I had to move them back to the bottom.

Straight up: Clemson

Points: take Clemson (-13.5)

Move: -1

22. Vanderbilt – So Vandy had it going leading 2-0 at the half against Georgia. But as usual the Commodores could not make it stick as Georgia pulled away in the 4th quarter. Vandy does have one heck of a punter, however. He will help them keep it close enough for the Cocks not to cover; 17 points is too much.

Straight up: South Carolina

Points: take Vanderbilt (+17)

Move: +1

21. Mississippi State – the good news? Jackie Sherrill is leaving after the season. The bad news? The NCAA is taking his place.

Straight up: Kentucky

Points: take Kentucky (-10)

Move: -1

20. Duke – Why am I picking Duke to be within 21 points of NC State?

Straight up: NC State

Points: take Duke (+21)

Move: +1

19. Alabama – Again, Alabama will be good sometime soon, just not this season. Tennessee should be able to recover after two weeks of dealing with their loss to Georgia. Even with this game at home, Bama will have trouble with the Vols.

Straight up: Tennessee

Points: take Tennessee (-3.5)

Move: -2

18. Kentucky – it's now or never for the Cats. Mississippi State is terrible.

Straight up: Kentucky

Points: take Kentucky (-10)

Move: +1

17. Wake Forest – Earlier this season it looked with this week's game with Florida State could decide the ACC champ. Now its just to decide if Wake has enough man power not to get blown out; which they don't.

Straight up: Florida State

Points: take Florida State (-19)

Move: -2

16. South Carolina – South Carolina's lackluster effort against LSU makes me wonder if Lou Holtz has lost touch with today's players.

Straight up: South Carolina

Points: take Vanderbilt (+17)

Move: same

15. NC State – Even after beating Clemson, State has proved all of nothing this season. 21 points is way too many.

Straight up: NC State

Points: take Duke (+21)

Move: +3

14. Virginia – A snoozer this weekend before Virginia plays NC State.

Straight up: Virginia

Points: OFF

Move: none

13. Clemson – Clemson has an off week this week with North Carolina. Wake Forest and Florida State are winnable games for Clemson in the next two weeks; but don't hold your breath, Tommy Bowden seems insistent to go away from what is working during a game.

Straight up: Clemson

Points: take Clemson (-13.5)

Move: -2

12. Georgia Tech – Tech is playing better and better. Can they beat Maryland and assert themselves as the leader for a Gator Bowl birth?

Straight up: Maryland

Points: take Maryland (-2.5)

Move: +1

11. Tennessee – A slip up against Alabama will put Phil Fulmer squarely on the hot seat.

Straight up: Tennessee

Points: take Tennessee (-3.5)

Move: +1

10. Arkansas – The Hogs had better pick it up quick or they will wind up back in the Music City Bowl. They now need tons of help to get back into the SEC West race. Arkansas can help themselves this week by beating Ole Miss.

Straight up: Arkansas

Points: Arkansas (PICK)

Move: -3

9. Ole Miss – If the Rebels are to be taken seriously they will beat Arkansas and avoid yet another late season meltdown. Its Eli Manning's time to shine.

Straight up: Arkansas

Points: Arkansas (PICK)

Move: +1

8. Maryland – The Terps could make it to another 10 win season if they can beat Georgia Tech this Thursday night. North Carolina, Virginia, NC State, and Wake Forest will all be underdogs when facing Maryland in November.

Straight up: Maryland

Points: take Maryland (-2.5)

Move: none

7. Florida State – Might the Noles look past Wake Forest to their match up with Notre Dame? Only if the Irish were good, which they are not.

Straight up: Florida State

Points: take Florida State (-19)

Move: -1

6. Florida – More up than down lately, the (dare I say) Mighty Gators might be back just in time to trounce Georgia again.

Off this week

Move: +3

5. LSU – It's only the biggest game of the year in the SEC West. We all figured that this would be the game that would decide the West and we were correct. I like the fact that LSU is at home in this game and that Auburn is a little bit one dimensional. The reason that I am picking LSU is because I think that they will slow Auburn's running game enough so that Jason Campbell will have to beat them.

Straight up: LSU

Points: take LSU (-3.5)

Move: none

4. Auburn – This might be Auburn's only loss of the SEC season. They have had tons of success in Athens and therefore it looks that Auburn could finish the SEC season undefeated if they can get past LSU. Auburn has never beaten LSU in Baton Rouge in the month of October (6-0; 1988,1980,1972,1969,1934,1902). Does that matter at all? No, but it is interesting.

Straight up: LSU

Points: take LSU (-3.5)

Move: none

3. Georgia – Georgia's 1st half performance against Vanderbilt left a lot to be desired. Will the same thing happen this week against UAB? Probably. Georgia palys its best in big games. UAB is not a big game.

Straight up: Georgia

Points: take UAB (+29.5)

Move: same

2. Virginia Tech – Watch out for the possible trap that West Virginia is setting up. The season begins and ends in 10 days against Miami.

Straight up: Virginia Tech

Points: West Virginia (+13)

Move: same

1. Miami – The Canes are resting themselves for next weekend's Sugar Bowl play in game.

Off this week

Move: none

Dean's lock of the week: UAB getting 29.5 points is the best bet this week. That's too many points for the Dawgs, who never seem to cover in these types of games (Middle Tennessee and Vanderbilt)
