Fearless Bowl Predictions: Southern Fried

Dean Legge takes a look at the bowl chances of all of the Southern schools.

A showdown between NC State and Florida State will determine the champion of the ACC. If the Noles win they are headed to the BCS. If NC State can beat FSU and win the rest of their games they will be the champions. Maryland is in between the top of the ACC and the bottom and will likely get the invite from the Gator Bowl no matter what at this point. They won't return to the Peach where they belong. Clemson's win moved them up tremendously because Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, teams that Clemson lost to, fell so low. Virginia could shoot past Clemson and the rest of the lower-tier teams because of their potential for big wins at the end of the season. Tech and Wake need to pull it together for a bowl.

Big East

It's very simple in the Big East. If Pitt wins out then they go to Miami for the Orange Bowl; or to play TCU in the Fiesta if things go horribly wrong. Virginia Tech will probably end up in the Gator Bowl and Miami will get stuck with the Insight Bowl if they lose to Pitt. If the Canes beat Pitt then all hell breaks loose in the Big East.

The most complicated situation is always the SEC because of its championship game. If LSU wins out then they go to the BCS no matter what. The same goes for Tennessee and Georgia. Florida needs Tennessee to lose against Kentucky to get into the BCS mix as they are virtually eliminated as far as the title race is concerned if the Dawgs and Vols win out. Should Georgia lose to Auburn or Kentucky, however, Florida will go to Atlanta for the SEC title game with either LSU or Ole Miss.

The Rebels will likely end up in the Cotton if they lose to LSU no matter if they beat State or not to end the season. Auburn will end up in either the Independence or in the Music City Bowl; a win over Georgia won't help them with that. Arkansas probably deserves better but they will get the Independence because the Music City won't want them two seasons in a row. South Carolina needs a win in their final two games to even become bowl eligible. I doubt that will happen but if it does they will wind up in the Houston Bowl and nothing says you've made it like the Houston Bowl.

Georgia and Tennessee could grab an at-large BCS spot if they win out and Texas screws up and loses one of their final games to Texas Tech or Texas A&M.
