Practice News and Notes

ATHENS - It was a slow day in Athens as the Bulldogs wait to get into pads tommorow. There where a few notes from today's practice.

Randall Swoopes missed practice today because of an illness that he got after lunch. Richt said that he did not learn that Swoopes would be absent until warm-ups. Swoopes' absence put even more stress on an offensive line that is already missing a ton of players.

This spring's running back competition is important but it will not determine the final pecking order at the position. Richt indicated that Tony Milton's return from injury will also impact the rotation at the position.

Kregg Lumpkin is currently listed as the number one running back while Michael Cooper is running with the number two team. Richt said that only three running backs will be able to prepare each week in the fall. Rotating four players, he said, "would be asking too much."

Richt said that he is pleased with what he sees at the linebacker and fullback positions. He said, however, cornerback and place kicker are the two positions that he is keeping a close eye on due to the irregularity at the positions.

In fact, Richt said that extra point kicking was "not very consistent."

Reggie Brown returned to practice today and Richt said that he and Fred Gibson are playing at a much higher level than the rest of the receivers. Brown had an excused absence Saturday.
