Spring Lessons: Fullbacks

Georgia spring practice concluded with its annual G-Day game. Here is a look at the fullbacks:

Jeremy Thomas will miss the first two game of the 2004 season because he is suspended for breaking team rules. Mark Richt did not go into details about what Thomas did to deserve the punishment but it means that Georgia will be without its best fullback for the first two games. Other than the suspension Thomas had a good spring. But will the suspension take away his role as team leader?

Des Williams will start the Georgia Southern and South Carolina games for the Bulldogs but he is not ready to be the fulltime starter, yet. That's not to say that his move to fullback is not permanent, it is, its just that Williams might be sharing playing time when Brannon Southerland come to Athens in the fall.

Key to this position:

Who will step up for Thomas in the first two games of the season? Georgia will be forced to use two inexperienced players.

Depth chart shuffle:

Chris Hickman is no longer with the team and Jamario Smith is now a linebacker. Thomas will miss the first two games which means that Williams will be the number one and Southerland will be the number two.

2004 Prediction:

Look for the fullbacks to provide better protection for Greene in 2004. Also, don't think that Richt will waive Thomas' suspension; that's not going to happen.
