FIRST QUARTER
SUMMARY
Georgia took a 6-0 lead but wasted opportunities for more points, thanks in large part to penalties. A punt block by Corrie Collier gave Georgia possession at the Tech 26, but Georgia lost one yard on four plays thanks to a chop block penalty. Billy Bennett was good on field goals of 40 and 44 yards.

Key stat: Thanks to 62 yards rushing by Verron Haynes, Georgia ran 21 plays for 118 yards, compared to only nine plays — and no first downs — for Tech.

Key play: David Greene threw at Tech cornerback Marvious Hester on back-to-back plays near the Georgia sideline, completing a pass for 48 yards to Fred Gibson at the Tech 11 after failing to hook up with Terrence Edwards. A personal foul penalty against Randy McMichael pushed Georgia back from the 8 to the 23.

Georgia field goal: Bennett 44 kick, 5:56. Drive: 4 plays, minus-one yard, 1:20. Key play: Collier broke through and blocked a Chris Morehouse punt to give Georgia possession at Tech's 26. A chop block penalty pushed Georgia back, but Haynes broke three tackles for a 14-yard gain to set up the field-goal attempt.
SECOND QUARTER
SUMMARY
Chronic red-zone problems for the Georgia offense continued to mount as Georgia managed only two more field goals. After trailing 9-0, Tech scored the next 10 points, moving 80 yards on 16 plays for a touchdown that was aided by a questionable personal foul penalty against Georgia on Tech's third-and-9 incomplete pass from its 42.

Key stat: Georgia Tech's initial first down came at the 11:11 mark of the second quarter, due to a penalty. On the next play, George Godsey pased to Will Glover for 10 yards and another first down.

Georgia Tech touchdown: Kelly Campbell 13 pass from Godsey (Luke Manget kick), 6:48. Drive: 16 plays, 80 yards, 5:58. Key play: On third and 9 from the Tech 42, Godsey's deep pass was incomplete but Georgia was called for a personal foul penalty — apparently on Jermaine Phillips — that Georgia coaches argued.

Georgia Tech field goal: Manget 28 kick, 4:29. Drive: 4 plays, 8 yards, 2:03. Key play: Attempting to reverse field on a kickoff return, Georgia's Fred Gibson fumbled and Sterling Greene recovered for Tech at the Georgia 18.

Georgia field goal: Bennett 28 kick, 1:04. Drive: 13 plays, 63 yards, 3:25. Key play: On second and 5 from the Tech 41, Greene passed to Gibson for 17 yards and later hooked up with the freshman for 11 yards to the 9.
THIRD QUARTER
SUMMARY
The scoring pace picked up as Tech moved ahead 17-15 on a 37-yard run by Joe Burns before Georgia finally pushed across its first touchdown of the game.

Key stat: Bennett set a Georgia record with his fifth field goal of the game. On seven times, Georgia kickers had four field goals, including one previous time by Bennett.

Georgia field goal: Bennett 37 kick, 8:06. Drive: 13 plays, 53 yards, 3:43. Key play: On third and 1 from the Tech 17, Musa Smith was dropped by Marvious Hester for a loss of one yard.

Georgia Tech touchdown: Joe Burns 37 run (Manget kick), 5:07. Key play: On second and 10 from the Georgia 37, Burns — gaining momentum through the quarter — broke through the middle of the line and ran toward open field toward the Georgia sideline, beating safety Kentrell Curry to the end zone.

Georgia touchdown: Haynes 3 run (pass failed), 2:33. Drive: 5 plays, 73 yards, 2:34. Key play: Greene and Gibson connected for a 50-yard gain to the Tech 24, and two plays later Haynes ran left on a sweep for 20 yards.
FOURTH QUARTER
SUMMARY
Turnovers were the difference late, as a Tim Wansley interception return for a touchdown and a fumble by Tech's Joe Burns, recovered by Sean Jones, allowed Georgia to pull away.

Georgia touchdown: Wansley 28 interception return (Bennett kick), 8:49. Key play: On third and 4 from the Tech 27, Godsey was looking for receiver Will Glover on the right side of the field, but anticipating the pass, Wansley stepped in front of Glover for the interception and easy touchdown run.
Georgia 31, Georgia Tech 17
Georgia field goal: Bennett 45 kick, 6:56. Drive: 4 plays, 7 yards, 1:06. Key play: Jones recovered a fumble by Burns that was caused by Johnathan Sullivan, giving Georgia possession at the Tech 34 after a celebration penalty.
