Georgia opened with a long drive, aided by a Houston personal foul on a punt, that ended with an interception thrown by David Greene at the Houston 10 on a pass intended for Randy McMichael. Tim Wansley had two long punt returns; one for a touchdown was called back by a holding penalty. The other, for 52 yards, ended with Wansley suffering a broken leg.

Key stat: Georgia managed only 45 total yards, including 22 yards rushing on nine carries by Verron Haynes.
With the game still scoreless, Georgia wasted another scoring opportunity when Terrence Edwards fumbled at the Houston 1 after a 29-yard catch. The fumble bounced into and out of the end zone for a touchback. The Bulldogs then took advantage of good field position set up by two punt returns by Edwards to take a 14-0 lead.

Key stat: Georgia had 104 yards on four punt returns in the first half — two by Wansley for 61 yards and two by Edwards for 43 yards.

Georgia touchdown: Haynes 2 run (Billy Bennett kick), 6:30. Drive: 6 plays, 50 yards, 2:05. Key play: Georgia kept it simple with four runs by Haynes for gains of 8, 12, 12 and 2 yards. Edwards caught a pass over the middle for 16 yards to the 2 to set up the touchdowns.

Georgia touchdown: Fred Gibson 12 pass from Greene (Bennett kick), 1:17. Drive: 3 plays, 48 yards, :52. Key play: LaBrone Mitchell made a nice adjustment for a 32-yard reception to the 16, and two plays later Gibson beat Victor Malone on a fade route for the touchdown.
Georgia opened the quarter with three touchdown passes before Houston answered with its first score. By the middle of the quarter, Georgia was bringing in such backups as running back Mike Gilliam and quarterback Cory Phillips.

Key stat: Through three quarters, Georgia held an advantage of 182-17 in net yards rushing. Haynes already had his third straight game over 100 yards rushing.

Georgia touchdown: Edwards 49 pass from Greene (Bennett kick), 13:06. Drive: 4 plays, 62 yards, 1:54. Key play: Greene passed to Edwards over the middle, and Edwards ran right to beat the Houston defensive backs to the end zone.

Georgia touchdown: Ben Watson 49 pass from Greene (Bennett kick), 4:52. Drive: 8 plays, 80 yards, 3:51. Key play: On third and 5 from the Houston 48, Greene looked to his right and then stopped and threw a screen pass back to his left to Watson, who ran straight down the sideline for the touchdown.

Georgia touchdown: Jarrett Berry 10 pass from Phillips (Bennett kick), 1:52. Drive: 5 plays, 28 yards, 1:52. Key play: The drive was set up by Decory Bryant's first career interception.

Houston touchdown: Orlando Inglesias 16 pass from Nick Eddy (Jeff Patterson kick), :03. Drive: 7 plays, 56 yards, 2:10. Key play: Sean Jones was called for pass interference while trying to defend Inglesias on a fourth-and-1 play from the Georgia 46, and Jones again was beaten by Inglesias on the touchdown pass.
A fumble recovery by Shedrick Wynn helped stop the Cougars at the Georgia 9. Gilliam saw most of the time at tailback and showed good speed, especially in his ability to turn the corner on toss sweep plays.

Key stat: Junior Ryan Davis recorded his first career interception to end Houston's last scoring threat with 25 seconds to play at the Georgia 17.
