Bailey and Coutu fight for kicking job

The battle for starting kicker will heat up in less than three weeks. Here is a quick look at one of Georgia's most important yet-to-be-determined starting spots.

Mark Richt said last week that he was pleased with what he was hearing about his place kickers' progress this summer. Scholarship kicker Andy Bailey and walk on Brandon Coutu battled to a draw this spring in the battle for the starting place kicking spot. The two young kickers made kick after kick at Georgia's G-Day game but neither made Richt confident enough to name a starter.

"I think that we are going in the right direction," said Richt, who is finalizing practice schedules for the upcoming two-a-days in August.

But if neither Bailey nor Coutu lock down the starting spot right away Richt says there is another player that will get a chance to take over as starter. "We have a freshman walk on coming to practice for fall camp," said an optimistic Richt.

Richt also said that he would be fine with a two kicker rotation with one player kicking close up attempts and the other kicking from long distance. But, in a perfect scenario, Richt said that he would like to see one kicker take over all kicking duties, including kickoff chores.

Gone: Place kicker Billy Bennett

Candidates: Andy Bailey and Brandon Coutu
