Georgia 20 - S. Carolina 16: How they scored

COLUMBIA, SC - A look at the scoring in today's Bulldog win.

First quarter

For the second straight week, Georgia's opponent came out substantially sharper than the Bulldogs, even if yardage didn't necessarily show it. The Georgia defense held after Tyson Browning fumbled a punt in UGA territory, but the blocking broke down and the Dogs gave up a safety. Tim Jennings and Greg Blue both botched the tackle on USC's long touchdown pass. Coordinator Brian VanGorder called the entire defense out for a serious scolding during a timeout on USC's first possession.

Key stat: Take away the long touchdown, and South Carolina gained 34 yards on 14 plays to 28 on 11 for Georgia, although USC had the ball more than twice as long.

USC: Safety, Danny Ware tackled in end zone, 9:07. Drive: none. Key play: A 33-yard punt downed at the three.

South Carolina 2, Georgia 0

USC: Troy Williamson 65 pass from Dondrial Pinkins (Thomas Hooper kick), :54. Drive: 3 plays, 70 yards, 1:39. Key play: USC took over on own 30 after Georgia missed a 47-yard field goal; Pinkins keeps for six on first down.

Score: South Carolina 9-0.

Second quarter

Greene was inconsistent and nearly got picked off again at the goal line, but he did have some nice passes, a few of which his receivers had to work for. The Bulldogs lost Ware with a chest contusion, but Browning had some nice runs and a good catch. Still, Georgia was singing those red-zone blues, settling twice for field goals.

Key stat: The Bulldogs outgained the Gamecocks 136-13, and ran 20 more plays.

USC: Ko Simpson 57 interception return (Hooper kick), 12:16. Drive:

None. Key play: None.

Key plays: Ware for 14 and 11 to start drive; Bryan McClendon 10 pass from David Greene on third and 6; Fred Gibson 14 pass from Greene on third and 7; Milner drops pass in the open on first down at the 18.

Third quarter

Georgia got a huge break when USC was called for offensive pass interference on a fake field goal. UGA was called for holding, and the play was repeated. But the field goal attempt was way short. Georgia assumed momentum with a its' best offensive drive of the day. USC managed only one first down and Georgia had an odd, quick, all-pass possession that did nothing. But the Bulldogs pulled within three.

Key stat: The ball-control USC had in the first was gone, the Gamecocks managing losing two rushing yards in the quarter on six attempts.

G: Browning 12 pass from Greene (Bailey kick), 6:20. Drive: 8 plays, 73 yards, 3:46. Key plays: Browning 15 from Greene on first play; Brown 18 pass from Greene; Gibson 24 pass from Greene, recovered own fumble.

South Carolina 16-13

Fourth quarter

Browning continued to play well and came up solid on the drive that put Georgia ahead. The hard hitting of the Bulldogs defense was clutch as Blue forced a red-zone fumble with a big stick of Pinkins with less than seven minutes left. But USC countered with the same quickly and got it back inside the 20 on a fumble by Michael Cooper. The Dogs defense, however, rose to the occasion to stop a fourth-and-1 play for no gain.

Key stat: Paul Oliver intercepted a pass that was deflected by Tim Jennings on the UGA 40-yard line with just fewer than three minutes remaining to seal the win.

G: Brown 22 pass from Greene (Bailey kick), 9:56. Drive: 7 plays, 62 yards, 3:42. Key plays: Gibson 6 pass from Greene; Browning 10 run on second and 6; Cooper gets 24 but gives 15 back on an unsportsmanlike flag for spiking the ball.

Score: Georgia 20-16
