Southern Football Predictions

Dean Legge makes his weekly picks for the 23 schools in the South.

1. AuburnGeorgia's coming soon, will Auburn roll through the Dawgs on their way to a BCS title berth? Kentucky and Ole Miss first, however.

2. Miami – Not looking like real national title contenders.

3. TennesseeErik Ainge made a good throw at the end of the game to be Ole Miss. If Alabama can stay in coverage (something Ole Miss and Georgia could not do) the Volunteers will have to rely on their running game to get it done. The Vols should win at home in this hate filled rivalry.

4. Georgia – the Bulldogs make their longest road trip of the season playing four games away from home for the first time in almost half a century. They are 13-1 in an opponent's stadium. Now that the Red Sox have beaten the Yankees, will this be Georgia's year to top the Gators? Arkansas shouldn't be overlooked, but they Hogs are beaten up.

5. Florida State – Win over Virginia was the best of the season, maybe the best in the last couple of seasons. But Florida State is not back.

6. LSU – Tigers better watch it – Troy State isn't that bad, and the Tigers have already struggled at home this season.

7. Florida – The Gators certainly don't seem very scary right now.

8. Virginia – Nothing went Virginia's way against Florida State. How will they react now that their season has finally started?

9. Virginia Tech – Hokies get together with Georgia Tech next week.

10. North Carolina State – the Wolfpack plays Miami this week in what could be an upset.

11. Alabama – Tide could play the upset role this weekend in Knoxville, but it's not likely. Still, if Bama wins, it sets up nicely for the Tide's comeback chances in the SEC West considering they get Auburn at home to finish the season.

12. Arkansas – Houston Nutt's crew might be in for a tough game with Mark Richt's road warrior Dawgs.

13. Wake Forest – If the Deacs are ever going to be taken seriously, they need to pull an upset against the likes of Florida State – the team they are playing this weekend.

14. Georgia Tech – Jackets get past Duke – now an off week before Virginia Tech and NC State.

15. Maryland – Terps look bad.

16. Ole Miss – Bad coverage lets Tennessee off the hook – the same way the Vols beat Georgia.

17. South Carolina – An off week before the Cocks host Tennessee.

18. Clemson – Maryland game is a must win for Tigers.

19. North Carolina – Heels are off before next week's loss to Miami

20. Kentucky – South Carolina was on the ropes until the Cats let them off with less than a minute to go.

21. Duke – Upset over Virginia? Nope.

22. Vanderbilt – Eastern Kentucky?

23. Mississippi State –State might not win again this season.

This week's games:

NOTE: these are Sunday lines; many have moved

Alabama (+13.5) at Tennessee
Winner straight up – Tennessee
Winner with points – Tennessee
Comment – This would be a major upset for Alabama to win in Knoxville.

Georgia (-6.5) at Arkansas
Winner straight up – Georgia
Winner with points – Georgia
Comment – The Bulldogs have been up and down lately, but there is very little up and down about going 13-1 on the road.

Kentucky (+27.5) at Auburn
Winner straight up – Auburn
Winner with points – Auburn
Comment – Again, Auburn has no threat of losing until Georgia comes to town.

Florida (-21.5) at Mississippi State
Winner straight up – Florida
Winner with points – Florida
Comment – A three touchdown favorite on the road might seem like too much, but if Florida can't beat the worst team in the SEC by that amount Ron Zook and his team are looking at a near 7-5 season.

Troy State (+22) at LSU
Winner straight up – LSU
Winner with points – Troy State Comment – The Trojans are still better than most expect. They won't beat LSU, but they will stay within three scores.

Eastern Kentucky at Vanderbilt
Winner straight up – Vanderbilt
Winner with points – No Line
Comment – I'm picking Vandy more on faith that an SEC team won't lose to the likes of a directional school in the Bluegrass State. Shame on any TV network that airs highlights of this one.

Maryland (-3) at Clemson
Winner straight up – Maryland
Winner with points – Maryland
Comment – I've been burned by Clemson all season; I hate picking this game. Take the Turtles, but don't be surprised if Clemson starts a turnaround now (this and their next game are at home before going to Miami and then winnable games against Duke and South Carolina).

Virginia (-18) at Duke
Winner straight up – Virginia
Winner with points – Virginia
Comment – How will Virginia react to knowing they are just another chump in the ACC race? They should beat lowly Duke.

Florida State (-15) at Wake Forest
Winner straight up – Florida State
Winner with points – Florida State
Comment – Florida State showed, once again, their dominance over ACC foes in Tallahassee. Might they struggle with Wake on Winston? It's possible, but not likely.

Miami (-6.5) at North Carolina State
Winner straight up – Miami
Winner with points – Miami
Comment – Miami is not as good as many think, and this is an upset special – I'm just not brave enough to pick it.

Virginia (-18) at Duke
Winner straight up – Virginia
Winner with points – Virginia
Comment – Virginia should recover nicely. Beating a pitiful program like Duke should be no problem.

Georgia (-6.5) at Arkansas
Winner straight up – Georgia
Winner with points – Georgia
Comment – 13-1 on the road actually means something: Georgia is a touchdown better than Arkansas.

Year – Lock of the week: 4 of 8 or 50% (doggie paddling)
Year – Straight up: 81 out of 102 or 79% (Better)
Year – Points: 43 of 48 or 49% (fighting for .500)
