Southern Football Predictions

Dean Legge makes his weekly picks for the 23 schools in the South, and bowl predictions!

1. Auburn – Will play for national title
2. LSU – LSU looks good right now; they will be one of three possible ten win teams from the conference
3. Georgia – Dawgs will were humbled by 2nd best team in the country
4. Virginia Tech – Will likely win the ACC – or at least share it
5. Tennessee – Vols are lucky their schedule tails off at the end considering their injuries as quarterback.
7. Florida State – The Noles should beat Florida, but neither program is near where it once was.
8. Virginia – UVa will split their games with the Techs – losing the game to their in-state rivals
9. Miami – See above – Miami is overrated
10. Florida – Gators kill Carolina – next year they'll have to beat the Ol' Ball Coach… not as easy.
11. Alabama – Difficult loss to LSU sends Bama to the Peach (likely).
12. North Carolina – A win over Duke and the Heels have to be considered the surprise team of the ACC this year.
13. Georgia Tech – Virginia and Georgia? 0-2.
14. Arkansas – Beating of Rebels was expected – now the Hogs get Mississippi State, another winnable game.
15. South Carolina – The Death Visor will not help this week against Clemson. It has been past time for Lou to leave.
16. Clemson – Duke? Tigers need a win over Carolina at Death Valley to go bowling. It should happen. Wins over South Carolina may have just gotten more difficult.
17. Wake Forest – Loss to North Carolina was a killer
18. Maryland – Game against Virginia Tech is a must win for a bowl – it's not likely.
19. Duke – Win over Clemson was totally unexpected – will they do the same against North Carolina? No.
20. North Carolina State – So bad
21. Mississippi State – Still a long way to go for State
22. Kentucky – A win over Vandy is nothing to brag about.
23. Vanderbilt – A loss to Kentucky is worse – Vandy won't escape the cellar of these rankings

This week's games:

NOTE: these are Sunday lines; many have moved

Auburn (-8.5) at Alabama
Winner straight up – Auburn
Winner with points – Auburn
Comment – They say you always throw the records out – not in this case. Auburn won't lose to Bama.
Arkansas (-10) at Mississippi State
Winner straight up – Arkansas
Winner with points – Arkansas
Comment – Picking a double digit unranked road favorite to cover is never good – Clemson proved that last weekend – but this week should be a win for the Hogs.
Ole Miss (+21) at LSU
Winner straight up – LSU
Winner with points – LSU
Comment – The Tigers will drill the Rebels. Three touchdowns is a lot, but LSU seems to be getting a nice rhythm this time of year.
Tennessee (-13) at Vanderbilt
Winner straight up – Tennessee
Winner with points – Tennessee
Comment – If the Vols were playing anyone other than Kentucky and Vandy these last two weeks of the season they would be in serious trouble.
Maryland (+10) at Virginia Tech
Winner straight up – Virginia Tech
Winner with points – Virginia Tech
Comment – Maryland has been up and down this season, but Thursday night they won't be up enough for Tech.
South Carolina (+2.5) at Clemson
Winner straight up – Clemson
Winner with points – Clemson
Comment – Last year it was ugly, this year Lou Holtz's future as a coach has not been decided. The Cocks want Steve Spurrier so bad they can't stand it any more. Many of them said "if Lou Holtz can't save us – no one can" when Holtz arrived. Spurrier won't be on the sidelines on Saturday to save the Cocks. Clemson should win.
North Carolina (-5.5) at Duke
Winner straight up – North Carolina
Winner with points – North Carolina
Comment – Duke upset Clemson last weekend, but Carolina has been underrated all season long. The Heels are better, no questions, and will prove that Saturday.
Florida (+6) at Florida State
Winner straight up – Florida State
Winner with points – Florida
Comment – Both of these teams are bad compared to their recent past. Florida is really down, but Florida State is way over ranked. The Noles placement in the top ten is a joke. Still, they will skate to another winning season by beating their hated rivals. \
Virginia (-6) at Georgia Tech
Winner straight up – Vriginia
Winner with points – Virginia
Comment – Some think Georgia Tech will pull the upset this weekend in Atlanta. Those people are wrong. Tech will play Virginia close and then lose by more than a touchdown.
Wake Forest (+18) at Miami
Winner straight up – Miami
Winner with points – Wake Forest
Comment – Nothing makes be think Miami is 18 points better than anyone in the ACC.
North Carolina (-5.5) at Duke
Winner straight up – North Carolina
Winner with points – North Carolina
Comment – Both teams have played well late in the season, but Carolina is better than Duke.
Year – Lock of the week: 6 of 11 or 55%
Year – Straight up: 110 out of 142 or 77%
Year – Points: 70 of 127 or 55%
