"But after researching and interviewing John and Kirby, I felt they were both so strong in terms of what they could bring to our program, I made the decision to go ahead and offer both of them positions right away," he said in a statement released by the school.
Richt left Sunday for Hawaii. He will coach the Aina team in the Jan. 22 Hula Bowl all-star game.
Jancek has a long history with VanGorder and Georgia defensive coordinator Willie Martinez. Last season, he served as the defensive coordinator at Central Michigan, where both VanGorder and Martinez spent time. All three also were on Central Florida's staff in the mid ‘90s.
"There are many outstanding coaches across the country at mid-major universities as we know from our experience with Coach VanGorder and Coach Martinez," Richt said. "(Jancek) already knows our defensive system from top to bottom. I think he will be a perfect fit right away."
Smart, a two-time All-SEC safety for the Bulldogs, coached the secondary for LSU last season and was the defensive coordinator at Valdosta State before that. This will be his first job coaching on the offensive side of the ball.
"We're getting a high energy coach with lots of enthusiasm who is an outstanding recruiter," Richt said. "I think he can add a new dimension and perspective to our offensive staff as we go about developing offensive game plans. And coming mostly from a defensive background could help develop physical toughness at the running back position. Being a Georgia graduate is certainly a plus as well."
