Georgia completes sweep of Elon

ATHENS - Eighth-ranked Georgia blanked Elon 3-0 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep as pitching was again the story at Foley Field.

Sophomore Brooks Brown along with Rip Warren and Johnny Dobbs combined on the shutout. Brown (1-0) struck out a career-high seven in six innings for the win while Warren pitched the seventh and eighth frames and Dobbs took care of the Phoenix (6-3) in the ninth for his first career save. In the series. Georgia (3-0) pitchers recorded 38 strikeouts and allowed only five walks and five runs. Brown scattered five hits and walked only one while Warren and Dobbs combined to strike out five.

On Sunday, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the third when Justin Niefer (3-for-5, RBI) singled, went to third on a double by Bobby Felmy and scored on a groundout by Josh Morris. Georgia left 12 men on base for the game but pushed across two more runs in the eighth for the final margin.

Brandon Masters (2-for-4) singled, stole second, and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Dunn. Adam McDaniel flied out to deep center allowing Masters to tag up and cross the plate for a 2-0 advantage. Then, Jonathan Wyatt followed with a double. After a wild pitch moved him o third, Niefer's two-out RBI-single made it 3-0.

Ryan Basham was the tough luck loser for Elon, allowing just one run on seven hits in six innings to fall to 1-1. He struck out two and walked three before giving way to Patrick Adams in the seventh.

Elon put two runners on with two outs four different innings but ended up stranding nine runners overall. Left fielder Chris Price went 3-for-4 to pace Elon's nine-hit attack.

Up next, the Bulldogs play host to Mercer on Tuesday. First pitch at Foley Field will be at 4 p.m.
