When Jon Fabris announced he was leaving Athens for Oklahoma it left one last coaching vacancy for Mark Richt to fill for the 2005 season. Brian VanGorder and Ken Rucker left the program in January and were replaced by Kirby Smart and John Jancek. Now the Bulldogs are one coach short going into spring practice, which is set to start on Saturday March 5th.
One of the potential replacements for Fabris is current Miami Dolphins' Defensive Assistant Travis Jones. First mentioned during the January coaching carousel, Jones played at Georgia in the 1990s; he worked with Smart under Nick Saban at LSU last year. Before that Jones was an assistant coach at Kansas for two years. He worked with the defensive line one season and specifically with the defensive ends the other year in Lawrence.
Jones served as the Recruiting Coordinator at LSU in 2004. That season the Tigers finished second in Scout.com's national team recruiting rankings.
But Jones' path to Athens may be a difficult one. He took the job with the Dolphins in the last month and Georgia did not get him during the coaching transition in Baton Rouge like they did with Smart.
Another, perhaps more realistic, candidate for the job is current Connecticut running backs coach Terry Richardson. A 1994 graduate of Syracuse, Richardson wore the fabled uniform number 44 that Jim Brown wore during his days as an Orangeman. After leading Syracuse in rushing in 1993, Richardson signed a free agent contract to play in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals. In his NFL career he spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles (1995), Kansas City Chiefs (1996) and Pittsburgh Steelers (1996-97).
He then coached one year of high school football in Florida before taking the running backs job at UConn. Richardson has been with the Huskies since 1999.
Mark Richt was reportedly very impressed by Richardson in January when the two met in Louisville for the annual American Football Coaches Association convention. Attempts to reach Richardson today were unsuccessful. He is out of town and won't be back until next week.
Richt is reportedly on vacation and is not set to return to Athens this week.
