Tony Wilson Stars on Offense and Defense

One thing is for certain, Mainland will once again have one of the better prospects in the State of Florida this year. Last year, Mainland had cornerback/running back Avery Atkins on their football team. The Mainland star is now at the University of Florida and is ready to make an impact at the next level. This year Mainland will have a very gifted athlete in wide receiver cornerback Tony Wilson.

As a receiver Tony Wilson had 35 receptions and over 600 yards receiving. Five of those receptions ended up in the end-zone. On defense Wilson had 20 solo tackles and 1 interception.

Scout.com had the chance to see Wilson perform this weekend. While most may feel that Wilson may play receiver in college its cornerback where he will most likely make his presence felt. Wilson has all the tools to be a solid cornerback in college. He has the size (5'11), speed (4.5) and the quickness.

What you also have to like is Wilson has those long arms that recruiters like to see on a cornerback. We asked Wilson where he would like to play in college, "I would rather prefer to play receiver but if my coaches want me at cornerback that's where I will play. I want the chance to return punts and kicks as well. I feel if the ball is in my hands something positive can happen," he said.

So how did Wilson think he performed at the recent Scout.com combine in Jacksonville, "I did alright, there is no doubt in my mind I could have done better. I ran a 4.5, but would have liked to have done better."

Here is what Wilson had to say on what he would like to accomplish this upcoming season, "I think our season will go well, but we are a young team. I need to step up a provide leadership that seniors are supposed to show. I want to help out some of the younger guys. Our team's main goal is to get back and win another state championship. I am hoping to lead the way."

What teams does Wilson like and who are his favorites at this time, "Georgia, Florida, Michigan, LSU and Florida State."

When asked what his deciding factor will be in choosing one of those schools here was Wilson response, "I want to go to a school that provides me with a good education. Getting a degree is my number one goal. I also want to go to a school were I feel comfortable. If I can't trust those around me than that school won't be for me."

This past Year University of Florida signed two of his former teammates. Will that have an impact on his decision on which school Tony chooses, "No, I have a teammate at Georgia that I am real close with Kelin Johnson. He plays safety there and I would not mind being in the same secondary with him. I want to also take all my visits before making a final decision."
