Richt suspends players

ATHENS - Two University of Georgia football players have been disciplined by head coach Mark Richt for participation in an altercation in downtown Athens early Sunday, April 10.

Senior linebacker Derrick White has been suspended for the Bulldogs' first two games this fall (Boise State and South Carolina) while senior defensive tackle Kedric Golston has been suspended for one game--the season opener vs. Boise State.

Richt said both will also be subject to internal discipline and community service assignments.

Richt indicated White's penalty was related not only to the incident on April 10 but also to other internal matters involving team guidelines.

"Discipline is something that is essential to team success," said Richt. "Student-athletes, like any citizen, are expected to adhere to appropriate behavior and in the recent situation downtown be responsive to law enforcement officials. These players will pay a price for their poor judgment and hopefully they will learn from it.

"While these type things are always difficult, it's important now to put this behind us and move on as a football team. Our concentration now needs to be on preparation for the upcoming season."
