FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- The 2002 Southeastern Conference Championship got underway at the University of Arkansas as the divers were the first in competition.
On Monday, Brooke Bassham turned in a season-best 275.50 to finish third on the 1-meter springboard. Classmate Molly Purvis was 21st (208.05), and Grace Cagle finished with 179.55 points as an exhibitioned diver.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs had two divers reach the finals, as freshman Todd Avery scored 503.40 to finish seventh, followed by sophomore Kris Daugherty in eighth (494.25) on the men's 3-meter.
Bassham added more points to the Lady Bulldogs' total with a 12th-place finish on the 3-meter with a score of 437.65 Tuesday. Purvis tallied 362.55 points to take 24th. Cagle accumulated 340.35 points.
Avery and Daugherty finished 11th (273.45) and 13th (270.50), respectively, in the men's 1-meter competition.
The diving events began Monday and will conclude Wednesday. The first swimming events will take place Wednesday evening and competition will run through Saturday.
The SEC Championships will continue Wednesday with the men's and women's platform diving competition. The 200-yard medley and the 800-yard freestyle relays will also take place on Wednesday evening.
