Georgia Softball Cracks USA Today/NFCA Top 25

Georgia softball ranked nationally

Athens, Ga.-----The first USA Today/NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) top 25 poll of the regular season was released Wednesday morning with the Georgia Bulldogs ranked as the No. 23 team in the country. This is the first time in six seasons that Georgia softball has been ranked nationally.

The Bulldogs earned 101 total points in the poll, sliding in just ahead of No. 24 Mississippi State (71) and No. 25 Massachusetts (60).

In 1997, after a 12-2 start to the season the Bulldogs earned a single vote for the top 25 but failed to get in. That was the only other time Georgia has received a vote for the poll.

The Southeastern Conference has five teams represented in the top 25. No. 5 LSU, No. 18 Alabama, No. 20 South Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi State give the SEC the second highest number of teams in the poll. The PAC-10 leads all conferences with seven teams in the top 25, including No. 1 UCLA.

The 15-0 Bulldogs, No. 1 UCLA (13-0), No. 2 Stanford (9-0) and No. 4 Oklahoma (8-0) are the only unbeaten teams in this week's poll.

No. 23 Georgia opens its home schedule this weekend with six games in the Bulldog Classic. Appalachian State, East Tennessee and Marshall will be in town for the weekend tourney, with Georgia's first games beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. against Appalachian State and 6 p.m. against East Tennessee.
