In No Rush

You could make a strong case that Andre Smith is the nation's No. 1 OVERALL prospect. He is a slam dunk future five-star prospect for and last night he talked about his school favorites.

You could make a strong argument that Andre Smith is not only the top offensive line prospect among the Class of 2006 but perhaps the top overall prospect regardless of position. This mammoth OL from Birmingham (Ala.) Huffman High School was the MVP of the All-American Combines in San Antonio back in mid-January. He is an athletic OL that you rarely find. For now, he is just trying to enjoy himself before all heck breaks loose this fall between school, football and recruiting.

"I am enjoying myself," said Smith. "We are in the middle of spring (football) right now and I am just trying to have fun. Practice and recruiting are going very well."

According to Smith he has close to 40 scholarship offers and he is in no rush to make a decision.

"I will base my decision on my visits and where I feel the most comfortable. This is not really going to be an Alabama-Auburn thing. I grew up on the fence and when those teams played I just watched the OLs. Right now I am open."

For Smith, he likes the Crimson Tide and in-state Tigers as well as Florida, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee and Southern Cal. Here is what stands out about each of these college football powers.

"Alabama has great tradition and lots of championships. And they have won so many bowl games.

"Auburn is a team on the rise that went unbeaten last season. Do you know how hard that is to do in the SEC?

"I like that new coach (Urban Meyer) at Florida. He went unbeaten at Utah and produced the first pick (Alex Smith) in the NFL Draft. At Florida under Myer you have to come in and work hard. I like that.

"Georgia is a great school that produces a lot of offensive linemen and skilled guys. Plus, I love their coaching staff.

"LSU has become a great program. I respect what Coach (Les) Miles did at Oklahoma State. They seem to have a great coaching staff there at LSU.

"Tennessee is another school that has produced so many super offensive linemen like (Mike) Munoz. I remember going there and watching practice and learning so much from just watching him.

"Then there is Pete Carroll and USC. What else can you say? They have won two national championships back-to-back and it's an incredible program that produces NFL players."

Smith has unofficially visited Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee. He is unsure as to whether he will camp anywhere this summer at this time.

So who will win the Andre Smith sweepstakes? Stay tuned because the answer will not likely come anytime soon for one of the nation's elite prospects.
