Dawgs blow chance at outright SEC East crown

The Georgia Bulldogs had the outright SEC East championship in their grasp but allowed Tennessee to snatch it away in overtime 71-63. Jarvis Hayes captured the SEC scoring title by scoring 28 points.

Due to Florida's loss to Kentucky earlier in the day, Georgia (21-8, 10-6 SEC) still tied for first in the SEC East with Florida and Kentucky. The Bulldogs won the number 1 seed in the SEC Tournament because of their regular season sweep of Kentucky.

Georgia led by as many as 18 points during the game but the Vols continued to fight back on a gritty performance by Jenis Grindstaff, a senior point guard who scored 12 points and seemed to constantly be in good position for the ball on Senior Day in Knoxville.

"I thought (Jenis) Grindstaff made some big shots, some I didn't expect him to make," said Georgia head coach Jim Harrick. "We called the last play of regulation to Jarvis, but we wanted to run some clock, and make sure we had the last shot. We were up 15 points, and just didn't shoot well in the second half."

Ezra Williams continued his ability to disappear in games by only making 1 out of 10 shots to total 3 points. Williams did hit the three-pointer to defeat Tennessee earlier in the season but never got on track in the second game against the Vols.

"It's disappointing," Harrick said. "We would have liked to have won the division outright. We won four league games on the road, and in a league this tough, that's pretty good."

Georgia plays the winner of the Vanderbilt-LSU 1st round matchup on Friday, March 8th at 1 PM on JP Sports affiliates.
