Minler works in Pope's shadow

ATHENS - There was a time when Georgia coach Mark Richt didn't mention Leonard Pope's name without saying that backup tight end Martrez Milner was right in the mix, too. Those days are gone.

Pope is first-team All-SEC on the league's coaches' preseason balloting and a preseason All-America in the eyes of some. Meanwhile, Milner caught four passes for 77 yards last year while battling back spasms.

Milner's back is better now, but he has a long way to go to catch up to the streaking Pope.

"There are no mixed emotions. Pope's my buddy," Martrez Milner said. "(Tight ends coach David) Johnson always tells us, there's enough cake for everybody."

Richt still is high on the athletic ability of the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Milner.

"Leonard is not going to play every play," Richt said. "The better Martrez practices the more chances he'll get. He's a very talented guy. If both those guys play their best, they'll both play."
