Georgia Volleyball Gets Win in Exhibition

ATHENS - The Georgia volleyball team defeated a group of former Bulldog letterwinners, 3-0 (30-17, 30-16, 30-23), on Saturday night at the Ramsey Center. It was Georgia's final exhibition before the 2005 season opener next Saturday night in Athens.

Senior Julia Petruschke led the way for the new Bulldogs with 17 kills, 10 digs and a .516 hitting percentage. Freshman Audra Janak had 47 assists.

"I was pleased with the way we played tonight," said head coach Steffi Legall. "It was a great warm-up to play someone else instead of practicing against each other. We were able to see everyone in a pressure situation and I thought they responded well.

"I want to thank our alumni for a good competition. It was a great turnout for a pre-season scrimmage," Legall said.

Senior Alexandra Oquendo, just back after qualifying for the World Championships with her national team in Puerto Rico, chipped in nine kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Senior Meagan Welch and redshirt freshman Maria Taylor combined for 15 more kills. Senior Liz Pace and sophomore Brooke Burlingame combined for 17 digs at the libero position.

Overall the new Bulldogs had a .407 hitting percentage.

Former Bulldog coach Sid Feldman was back on campus to lead the squad of former letterwinners. That team was led by Nikki Nicholson Chester's 10 kills and 10 digs. Margot Wallace and Mindi Westfal combined for 31 assists and Lane Fluker Perno finished the evening with seven kills and two digs. Hadli Anstine Daniels had five kills, six digs and a .625 hitting percentage.

Georgia's regular season opens Saturday, August 27 at 7 p.m. against Charlotte in the UGA Ramsey Center.
