Dawgs will have final scrimmage tommorow

ATHENS — Georgia will hold its final scrimmage of the preseason Thursday afternoon at Sanford Stadium. It will be more important for some than for others.

"There are a couple of guys I know we're real interested in," defensive coordinator Willie Martinez said. I'm not going to say it's the last opportunity, but... we obviously have to start gearing down for Boise State."

Today could go a long way toward determining which freshmen play and which redshirt this season, Martinez said. For example, freshman safety C.J. Byrd is still battling walk-on Drew Williams to back up Tra Battle.

The starting strongside linebacker job is also still open with Danny Verdun Wheeler pushing Brandon Miller.

On offense, most of the positions are settled, except for wide receiver, where several players, most notably Kenneth Harris and T.J. Gartrell are competing for the third spot.

The Bulldogs' scrimmage today will be a practice game in which the team will go through its full pre-game routine, play two quarters and then head to the locker room to simulate halftime. There will be drills after the half.
