South Carolina: Over/Under - Revisited

ATHENS – Dean Legge revisits the critical numbers in Georgia's matchup with South Carolina.

93 yards rushing by a Gamecock…

"Since South Carolina entered the SEC in 1992, the Gamecocks have beaten Georgia four times (1993, 1996, 2000 and 2001). South Carolina has had a 100-yard rusher in two of the four contests, and one that was very close.

Brandon Bennett (108 yards in 1993), Duce Staley (170 yards in 1996), and Derrick Watson (93 in 2000) all rushed for at least 93 yards against the Dawgs in three of Carolina's four conference wins against Georgia. Watson actually ran for more than 100 yards, but lost some yardage on plays, and that knocked him below the 100-yard mark. The strangest loss came in 2001 when Watson was held to less than 40 yards rushing, but set up a Gamecock touchdown with an 80-yard kick return to open the game.

The Gamecocks totaled only 32 yards rushing last Thursday against Central Florida bad enough for last place in the SEC."

Carolina continued to struggle with the run. The Gamecocks were limited to 43 yards on 23 carries. South Carolina's leading rusher, Mike Davis, had only 38 yards on eight carries.

23 points…

"Since 1997, South Carolina has managed only 11 points a game Between the Hedges. In fact, since 1992 – when the Cocks entered the SEC – they have never scored more than 23 points against Georgia.

That has not prevented Carolina from winning, however, their chances go down significantly when they don't score more than 23 points against the Dawgs. In the Gamecocks' 13 all-time wins against Georgia, they have scored 23 points or more eight times. In fact, South Carolina has scored exactly 23 points four times against Georgia and has won all but one of those games (1995 42-23 in Athens)."

Carolina nearly won the game, but once more they struggled to score in Athens and against the Bulldogs. The Gamecocks ended with only 15 – an all time low for a Steve Spurrier lead offense against Georgia.

9th …

"Georgia is ranked ninth is this week's AP Poll. Steve Spurrier holds an impressive record against all ranked foes at 45-29-1 – including a 6-1 record against ranked Georgia teams. Spurrier is only 19-18-1 against teams ranked in the top ten, however, he is 2-0 against top ten ranked Georgia teams."

Spurrier falls to 6-2 against ranked Georgia teams, 45-30-1 against ranked foes and 19-19-1 against top ten teams.

27 points…

"Georgia failed to score more than 26 points in every contest against a Spurrier-lead team except in their 1997 blowout win over Florida."

The Bulldogs only scored 17 points, but held on for another close win against the Gamecocks.

"In all four of Georgia's losses to South Carolina since 1992, the Bulldogs turned the ball over more than the Gamecocks."

Georgia got two turnovers, but turned it over twice – still, Georgia's turnover margin was not negative and they won the game. South Carolina's Jonathon Joseph took D.J. Shockley's pass 42 yards for one of Carolina's two touchdowns.
