Duke Picks Dawgs!

Mark Richt's Georgia Bulldogs have raked in the #2 recruiting class in the country so far on Scout.com and on Thursday night that class got even better when 4-Star California TE Na Derris Ward committed to the Dawgs. The West Coast product becomes the 25th player to verbally pledge to UGA in the class of 2006.

"I told Georgia I was committing on my in-home visit on Monday. Coach Richt just jumped up and hunged me. They all hugged me real tight. They said they could enjoy some Christmas rest because they got that early present they were looking for," Na Derris Ward said.

What set the Dawgs apart for Duke?

"I mean, it's just like when you look at Universities you try to judge them against each other. You come to a conclusion after that and when I did that with Georgia and LSU I just felt like everything was at Georgia. There was not one thing I didn't like. The coaching staff was wonderful, the players were wonderful and the facilities were wonderful. Georgia had everything I wanted."

Recruiting is often a family decision and the Georgia staff did a good job of connecting with Ward's.

"My mom loves it. I have family down there and I used to spend summers in the G A so I know what it's all about. She's very happy I'm going to Georgia."

How does he think he'll fit in on the depth chart at tight end?

"They're not for sure yet what Pope is going to do. I spoke with him personally and he said he didn't know yet. He thought he may go though he was just waiting on some things. I know Martrez will be there and I would love to work behind him and learn what I need to learn."

One thing that excites Na Derris about Georgia is the chance to play and work alongside the #2 QB in the country, Matthew Stafford.

"Just watching him on film and hearing the comparisons, I'm just excited to finally work with him. I've spoken to him a few times and we get along well. I'm ready to get down in the summer and put in work with him early. He's going to have a headstart on me because he's going down there in January but I can't wait to catch up with him and make sure were on the same page. They say you have to be best friends with the quarterback so I'm gonna make sure we have that chemistry as soon as I get to Georgia."

The Dawgs have been heavily recruiting one other player on the west coast besides Ward and that is 5-Star WR David Ausberry. Despite Ausberry being open among a couple of programs, it hasn't stopped him from trying to contact Na Derris.

"I've been missing Ausberry. He's been trying to call me and I keep missing him. Georgia thinks they have a good shot at him because they say his mom really likes Georgia but he's also considering Ohio State and USC. I'm going to try and talk to him and tell him what I know."
