Gym Dogs To Open Season at the Beach

For the first time since 1996, Georgia will compete outside the United States with a five-team meet in Cancun, Mexico at 8 p.m. ET on Friday night. The Gym Dogs will face four ranked teams in Stanford, Oklahoma, Arizona and Denver at the Moon Palace Resort.

The Gym Dogs are the defending national champions and ranked first in the preseason coaches poll. Georgia has once successfully defended an NCAA championship when it had back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1998 and ¹99.

Like the 2005 squad, Georgia again will be led by just one senior in Houston native Brittany Smith. She is a three-time All-American including a first-team honor on the vault last season. The Gym Dogs also return All-Americans Nikki Childs, Kelsey Ericksen, Katie Heenan and Ashley Kupets from last year¹s championship team. Heenan is the defending SEC all-around and beam champ.

Five freshmen join the seven returning letterwinners including two-time Olympic medalist Courtney Kupets as well as three-time JO national champ Tiffany Tolnay.

Live scoring for the meet will be available on Georgia's home opener is set for Sat., Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. against Maryland.
