Ellerbe was charged with felony theft by taking after he took teammate Marquis Elmore's 1988 Chevrolet Caprice without Elmore's permission, according to an affidavit for arrest obtained by The Telegraph from the Magistrate Court of Athens Clarke-County.
According to the court documents, the 20-year-old Ellerbe used another person's driver license to gain admittance to Toppers International Showbar, a nude dancing bar in downtown Athens. After being taken to his dorm room by a teammate other than Elmore, Ellerbe returned to that teammate's residence covered in blood and told his teammate he had been in an accident, the documents state. After the teammate and Ellerbe returned to the scene of the one-car accident on the River Road Loop, the teammate called 911 out of concern for Ellerbe's health, according to the documents.
Officers responding to the scene smelled alcohol on Ellerbe, and he was placed under arrest. Ellerbe was charged with felony theft by taking of a motor vehicle and misdemeanor charges of DUI, underage possession and giving a false statement. He originally told police officers he was injured in a fight. Dannell Ellerbe was released on $13,000 bond.
He had 15 tackles in 10 games played this year.
The Bulldogs also announced Friday that seven players will have surgery this month. Wide receiver A.J. Bryant (shoulder), Elmore (wrist), wide receiver Demiko Goodman (shoulder), defensive end Jeremy Lomax (shoulder) and fullback Brannan Southerland (shoulder) all are expected to miss practice as the result of their procedures. All are expected to return in time for fall practice.
